I read the Golden Compass when I was 14. At the time I hated reading and I had picked this book up randomly, without any knowledge of it. I believe it had come out only a few years before I started reading, yet the book I picked up was pretty beaten up. I started reading and I absolutely loved it. As somebody who enjoyed the book as a kid I really enjoyed the movie. It brought back some old memories. I'm not sure if I would feel the same way about it had I not picked it up as a kid, though. Maybe.
